My name is Sarah Hromack and I am a digital strategist, creative director, and writer based in Brooklyn, New York.
As a leader, I have spearheaded thinking around arts and culture-focused digital platforms and interface design, first as an early-adopting art blogger and editor and eventually as the founding director of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Digital Media Department (2009-2015), where I led the creative and technical development of the museum's digital channels. I did the same at the Pratt Institute as its founding Director of Digital Communications (2019-2023).
With a consistent focus on this growing field — developing new, insightful, and informed ways of engaging audiences with art and visual culture while maintaining an understanding of the technologies and platforms involved — I have written on the topic for publications such as 'Frieze', 'Artforum', 'Art in America', 'Mousse', and 'Rhizome'. My writing has been supported by a Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant.
I have been fortunate enough to teach about the work I do: I lectured on the strategic relationship between digital media and arts organizations in the MA Program in Visual Arts Administration in the Department of Art and Art Professions at New York University's Steinhardt School (2013-2018); I also served as a visiting critic and writing mentor in the MA Graphic Design program at the Rhode Island School of Design (2017-2018). I have given talks and organized projects in places from Portland to Krakow.
Practically speaking, I possess extensive people and project management experience, both IRL and virtually. I am exceptionally adept at building and leading inclusive, dynamic operations through institutional and cultural change periods. I have successfully managed creative teams on both coasts and abroad for over fifteen years. I work with tenacity, empathy, and a sense of humor!
I hold an MA, with honors, in Visual and Critical Studies from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, California and a BFA, with honors, in Fine Arts and Art History and Theory from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.
